Rock on — the first Star Trek: Nemesis trailer is online!

  2. I know most of these June 28, 2002

Here’s a fun little read — someone’s made a list of the top 40 gay themes, compiled not (necessarily) by popularity, but by the songs themselves and their relationship to the gay world.

  3. Good ruling, bad timing June 28, 2002

In today’s political climate, I just don’t think that even the Supreme Court will have the will to uphold this ruling. A shame, too — no matter my personal religious beliefs, I fully support the decision that was made here.

  4. Political compass June 27, 2002

Here’s an interesting online test — a Political Compass that adds a vertical Authoritarian/Libertarian line to the traditional horizontal Left/Right line and uses a series of questions to map out your political position.

  5. I’m back! Really! I’m here! June 26, 2002

I got back in Monday night, I’ve just been too caught up in either resting or getting life as usual going again down here to have tossed anything up on the page for the past couple days.

  6. St. Patrick’s Gargoyle June 24, 2002

Using the concept that some of the Gargoyles we see on churches and buildings are actually angels assigned to Earth, Katherine Kurtz creates an entertaining little mystery story with a touch of light theology thrown in here and there.

  7. Off to Anchorage June 21, 2002

Well, Laura’s here, and we’ll be heading off to take me to the airport in the near future here. Then it’s off to Anchorage, to visit friends and see James and Stacy get married — woohoo!

  8. The Blogger’s Manifesto June 20, 2002

As one of the many people across the ‘net who are blogging, it’s both interesting and amusing — however, for various reasons, I don’t think I’ll be adopting it.

  9. Getting ready for Anchorage June 19, 2002

Well, I’ve got one more day of work ahead of me, then I’ll be heading back up to Anchorage for the weekend — woohoo! I currently have no clue quite how the weekend is going to work out…it’s definitely going to be interesting to see what happens.

  10. Exactly June 18, 2002

To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.

  11. Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Enternal Golden Braid June 18, 2002

This book is an exploration of everything from mathematics to the mechanics of thought and reasoning to Artificial Intelligence, all tied together and interrelated to each other. Fascinating, fascinating stuff.

When activated, this I-Bomb creates an EMP (Electromagnetic Pulse) that destroys all electronic equipment, yet is physically harmless to structures or living beings.

  13. Has Kevin been keeping track? June 17, 2002

While my tv situation doesn’t allow me to catch any of the games, I’ve been trying to keep an eye out for articles on the World Cup, and woke up this morning to a nice surprise — the US beat Mexico 2-0, and are advancing to the quarter-finals!

  14. More constitutional fun June 16, 2002

By executive fiat, the Constitutional protections of American citizens are now officially contingent upon the whims of the President. So much for a nation of ‘laws, not men.’ I don’t care what your politics are. If you don’t find this deeply disturbing…well, I really don’t know what to say.

  15. Guess I got out in time June 16, 2002

It was definitely interesting to be able to watch some of the downfall of Andersen from the inside for a while — and to see the final results as they come down the newswire. Neat stuff.

  16. Even permafrost can melt June 16, 2002

An interesting piece from the NYT about just how drastically global warming — despite Bush’s insistance that it’s not a real worry — is affecting Alaska.

  17. Freedom of speech? June 16, 2002

I welcome anyone to these rallies, and I welcome you to theirs. I hope you will never go to theirs and stop them from speaking. I believe in free speech at every university in America.

  18. One year in Seattle! June 15, 2002

It’s been a good year. The usual ups and downs of day to day life, sometimes with a bit more stress due to the new environs and the general issues of transplanting one’s life, but overall, pretty good.

  19. tetris is so unrealistic June 14, 2002

A jet going 100 m.p.h. slammed into a deer, which ruptured a wing fuel tank and dumped 70 gallons of gas on the runway.

  20. Short attention span voyeurism June 14, 2002

It’s really hard not to go up to an intern in the middle of surgery and say, ‘Don’t freak out, but you’re doing that all wrong.’ I try not to do it if the patient’s only under local.

  21. Not in Our Name June 14, 2002

There is a deadly trajectory to the events of the past months that must be seen for what it is and resisted. Too many times in history people have waited until it was too late to resist.

Incidentally, each of these movies has the distinction of having one of my first ‘movie star crushes’ — Mia Sara in Legend, and Michelle Meyrink as Jordan in Real Genius.

  23. It is so hot out! June 13, 2002

Where a week ago Seattle was setting record low temperatures, this week things have done a complete 180, and from what I hear we’re pushing record highs for this time of year.

  25. Mentally 19? June 13, 2002

According to the What’s your mental age? test, I’m mentally 19. It’s a bit of a shame that it doesn’t give any sort of justification or reasoning for that, but hey — good to know, I suppose.
