9-11 tributes
Links September 11th, 2002 |
Several sites across the ‘net are altering their front pages as a tribute to the 9-11 attacks. Some aren’t bad, some seem to be pretty ridiculous (to me, at least).
Of the ones I’ve seen so far, Yahoo’s seems the silliest. Essentially the same old Yahoo! as ever — just all in greyscale. I kind of prefer the approach that other sites have taken (such as Excite, who set their main page to a simple black background, a rememberance message, and links to enter the content area). This just gives me the feeling that while Yahoo figured they had to do something, they sure as heck weren’t going to hide their content — why, some poor soul might actually get distracted by thinking about actual issues and miss out on some ads!
Then again, maybe I’m just too cynical.

personally i thought google was the most tasteful with a very small ribbon below the search bar. then again - the only site that could really achieve that level of simplicity would be google. i love that search engine more and more each day.
lycos was done quite tastefully as well. By the time I’d looked @ the excite page, they had switched to normal layout with both ad spaces dedicated to 9-11 rememberance links.
something interesting to look at is the white house’s web page, where Bush’s version of Sept. 11 (starring Dubya himself!) is featured today.

Definitely agree re: Google — not only does their search engine seriously kick butt, but the overall impression that the site gives of the people behind it is always good.
I took a few moments to start poking around the White House’s site. You weren’t kidding about starring Dubya himself, were you? :-))
I pretty much got three impressions out of the White House’s pages.
I’m guessing that those probably weren’t the impressions intended by the people who put that display together, however.
Anyway, I’ve now written a comment to my own post that’s longer than the post itself. Time to shut up.
