Happy New Year!
Life January 1st, 2003 |Welcome to 2003, everyone! Here’s a toast I learned from Casey years ago…
Here’s to you, here’s to me, friends shall we ever be. Should we ever disagree… …fuck you, and here’s to me!
A little crass, sure, but amusing. Hope the new year goes well for all of you.

Here is an Irish toast for the new year:
May God turn all you enemies into friends. If that cannot be, may God turn all their ankles so you will know them by their limp.
Have a great new year, Mike. You deserve it.
Love
Dad

AND last night we went through all the extras, and got a good start on the movie with the Director’s commentary. We’re wending our way through Anna and the King.
Love you — =D>

We finished the director’s commentary last night. It was wonderful.
I was surprised, however, about his lack of insight into Thai culture, given the film he made. There ware a few examples, but the most egregious was his statement, at the end, that the cultural differences would not be as important in the love story today as it was in the time of King Mongkut.
This is just not so. If the present King of Thailand, Bhumibol Adulyadej, for example, was to “put aside” his present wife (Mom Rajawongse Sirikit Kitiyakara - she goes by Queen Sirikit) for an English (or anyone) individual, the cultural repercussions would be far greater than when Edward of England abdicated the those for Mrs. Wallace. The King and Queen are “icons” to the Thai, and their pictures are in every home, business, etc.
Nevertheless, we enjoyed “playing” with the DVD immensely, and are looking forward to doing the same with “The King and I.” I have been in the King’s Palace, I have seen the Royal Barge (though the King was not on it), I have been to Ayuttayah, I have seen the Emerald Buddah, etc. It brought back fond memories in the midst of a “not so fond” time. I was also fascinated by what was “real” and what was CGI. By the bye, Mike, you have been on the river in Sacramento where they built the bridge. You were one, though, and could not possibly remember.

Another “by the bye” - as the present King is getting on in years (he was born in 1927), here is information on the most likely successor:
His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn HRH the Crown Prince of Thailand was born on 28 July 1952, the only son of the King and Queen. His Royal Highness was invested the title of Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Thailand on 28 December 1972. He received his education at Kings Mead and Millfield Schools in Great Britain, and at the King’s School and the Royal Military College at Duntroon, Australia. He also received the Degree of Bachelor of Laws from Sukhothai Thammatirat University, Thailand.
Since he was young, he was inclined towards the life in the military, and has since shown himself to be a great Military Man. After his father, he has immersed himself in activities in promotion of the general welfare and economic betterment of his people as well as activities in promotion of public health through the Crown Prince Hospital and the Maha Vajiralongkorn Foundation. He has also represented his father on numerous State Visits abroad, far too many to list in just a page. The Crown Prince is a much loved figure in Thailand, and will continue to be so for many years to come.
The Crown Prince has 2 daughters and 4 sons HRH Princess Bajra Kitiyabha (7 December 1978) HSH Prince (Mom Chao) Juthavachara (29 August 1979) HSH Prince (Mom Chao) Vacharaesorn (27 May 1981) HSH Prince (Mom Chao) Chakriwat (26 February 1983) HSH Prince (Mom Chao) Vatchrawee (14 June 1985) HSH Princess (Mom Chao) Siriwanwaree (8 January 1987)
