Tired of the ‘renovations’
Life February 3rd, 2003 |Grrrrrr…. I woke up this morning to find a note slipped under my door telling me that the power to the building was going to be cut off again today, due to the construction/renovation work currently going on. Fat lot of good that note did me, though, considering the power was already off when I woke up. I’m just glad I didn’t oversleep, since I didn’t have my alarm to get me up!
Then, when I come home, there’s a note on the front door of the building letting us tenants know that the water will be shut off during the day tomorrow.
I’m getting so sick of this. Our building hasn’t had working laundry facilities for three months now, so we all need to try to find time to truck our laundry up to the nearest laundromat (open only until 9pm, and charging $2 per wash). We had a full month without reliable hot water, which ended with four days without any hot water. The heat has been an on-and-off thing. Water is apparantly still an on-and-off thing. We keep getting told that they’re “almost done,” that the construction work will be done “any time now.” We’re all sick of hearing that, and quite a few people have left the building because finding a new place was less of a pain in the ass than putting up with everything here. Ugh. Time for this to be done. Finito. End of story.
Anyway, if you’re a regular or semi-regular visitor here, and couldn’t get through, that’s why. No power to the building, no power to the computer, no website. Bleah.
Hopefully this really will all be done with soon. I’m more than ready for it to end.

I know how the builing thing goes..I have had the same trouble in mine too…we rarely have electricity or water during the day now. If I were you, I would have moved as well, though I know that you had a hard enough time just getting into the placethat you have now. I am sorry that your apartment sucks love. I spoke to Rick the other day, and he said that he would love for you to be his roommate. What do you think? Would it be worth it to make another house of ill repute?
Or is the payoff of freedom just too sweet to be ignored?

Rick and I have been talking about the roommate thing again for a while now; I keep waffling back and forth on it.
Pros: We know we make good roommates (lots of experience). I’ve never lived with his other two roommates (Tim and Liza) before, but I’ve known Tim for a while and don’t think it’d be a problem, and I trust their judgement on Liza. Rent would be cheaper. Their ‘net connection is faster than mine. It’s a much (MUCH) bigger place than mine.
Cons: It’s in Ballard, rather than downtown. While I’ve got nothing against Ballard, I do love living here in downtown, withing walking distance of everything. Additionally, moving to Ballard would add at least a good 45 minutes to an hour to my bus time to and from work. And, of course, this is my first time actually living on my own, without roommates, and I have to say that I’ve been enjoying it a lot. Going from my own place to living with three other people (and only one bathroom/shower!) would be a definite switch.
I haven’t made a decision one way or the other yet — there are days when staying here sounds best, there are other days when moving out there seems best — but it’s definitely bouncing around my head. Part of the decision process rides on things here at this building. In the midst of the renovations they’ve added a few new apartments, one of which down in the basement is really cool, and I might have a chance at moving into it. If I can get that, then that might be enough to keep me here. We’re still waiting to see what the rent is going to be for that unit, though.
One way or another, I’ll need to make a decision at some point in the near future, just so I don’t continue keeping Tim, Rick, and Liza in suspense!

I don’t think the bathroom ( 1 for 4 people ) is near the issue it could be, with Rick and I up at 4am and out the door at 5am and Liza up at 7 and out the door at 8am I don’t think you’ll even SEE us during the week at least not during the morning, I’m sure when you get up you’ll have the house to yourself. I’m in bed by 8pm ( hey - Backoff… I get up at 4 ! dammit ) I’ll be asleep before you even get off work, The extra time to get to work from Ballard is very real and you would have to decide if your willing to give up time for lower rent and more space. And by the way, Sylvia is pissed you didn’t mention her and said next time you come over she’s going to bite you on the ankle.
