My Netflix queue
Film 05/08/2003 |After severely decimating my movie collection, I got to talking with one of the guys at work, and he gave Netflix a glowing recommendation.
It looks like a handy little service. You select what moves you’d like to rent, and then subscribe for a $20/month fee. As movies become available, Netflix sends them to you. You watch them, then send them back. No per-day charges, no late fees — just send them back whenever you’re done. You’re allowed to have three out at a time, and when you send any back, more from your list get sent to you.
So, I figured what the heck, and signed up. If anyone’s really morbidly curious, I’ll keep track of what’s in my queue here. Feel free to suggest some, too!
Update: Trying to keep track of my rental queue was rapidly becoming fairly obnoxious to try to deal with as I kept adding stuff, so I’ve discontinued that. I’ve also moved my mini-reviews to posts of their own, rather than perpetually adding comments to this post. They’ll show up on the main page, or you can always check the MovieReviews category listing to catch up.

I’ve debated for a long time about actually signing up for NetFlix, but only because I don’t know f I’ll really watch enough movies to justify the $20/month I’ll be charged. Please let me know how you like the service… I’m interested to know what you think!

Netflix rocks! That’s what we use at my house. In fact, I haven’t paid for a rental since moving in here 5 months ago:) We have something like 140 movies on our list though. You know me, not good with movie titles

The lovely Wudi, I was looking thru your list of movies to watch, I have seen most of them but my fav is Billy Elliot, (they almost talk like me lol) pretty sure you will like it. SO yes, that means watch it NOW. :X

I found “The Dangerous ives Of Altar Boys” to be interesting in a weird sort of way. It is a non-sexual coming of age movie, and intersperses live action with manga style animation. Jody Foster produced it and plays the “heavy.” Berta and I rented the DVD, and the spedial features” were great, as well.
The Apostle is a great film about a man with great faults who believes himself to be “God intoxicated.” The sound track CD, by the way, is also quite good.
Is “Ghost World” worth seeing? Love

I remember you being very impressed with The Apostle when you first saw it — it’s been on my ‘too see’ list for ages, so I tossed it in the queue. I’ll let you know about Ghost World when I get to it, though it may be a couple weeks. I’m really starting to like this NetFlix deal…

Ok, I was looking through your “in the queue” list and thought to myself, ‘Hell, I can send him most of those and he could save himself $20.’ Then I cam to my senses and realized that $20 in Wudi’s pocket does nothing for me and the severe braining I would receive after my mother found out what I had done with the movies. But I digress. ‘XXX’ sucked. End of story. I thought ‘Vin Diesel, brainless action, good enough to waste 90 minutes.’ I rented it for a buck and felt ripped off. ‘Bourne Identity’, ‘Brotherhood of the Wolf’, and ‘Ghost World’ were all great. Each of them for differing reasons but all good. And if I had known that you were more interested in older movies, I would have brought more to your house when you were still up here. I thought I was pushing it with ‘Harvey’. Ok, I’m done. Oh wait, ‘Donnie Darko’ is the best movie I’ve seen in a long time just for it’s ability to convey what I previously thought to be intangible and impossible to portray on film. Ok, now I’m done.

Oh, I’m fully expecting XXX to suck — I think that’s part of why I rented it.
As for older films, I’m definitely interested! I just don’t know as much about older stuff, so it’s harder for me to pick out ones I might like. One of the things I’m thinking about if I do stick with NetFlix is going through the AFI’s top 100 movies list and seeing all the ones I haven’t (about 60% of the list, I think). Besides, one of my favorite movies of all time, and one that I didn’t sell in my purge of the collection, is ‘His Girl Friday’ — and if you haven’t seen that one, you must! Feel free to toss more recommendations at me, too.
I was thinking about that $20/month price, too. In all honesty, I think that’s cheaper for me than renting movies normally would be, purely because I’m so ridiculously absent minded that I don’t know if I’ve ever returned a movie on time. I’ve lost track of how many firstborn children I’ve owed to Blockbuster and Hollywood Video over the years, so I think if I ever want to keep any of my kids, this isn’t too bad of a deal at all…

Berta and I really enjoyed My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and, though my family is not Greek, it reminded her (whose family is small) of meeting my mother’s huge extended family in Martinsville IN.

Though this is a “first run” film, and I expect people will se it for the amazing special effects, I have heard some terrible reviews of the new Matriix movie. One person on NPR said the dialog was like the crew of “Deep Space 9” on a bad day.

Donnie Darko is one of the best films I’ve seen in a long time too. The website is also excellent and a little scary as well, especially if you haven’t already seen the film. Be prepared to spend between half an hour and an hour going through it - seriously.
Another fun point about Donnie Darko - the guy who plays Donnie is Jake Gyllenhaal. The girl who plays his older sister in the movie is Maggie Gyllenhaal, his real sister, and also the submissive star of Secretary.
I didn’t realize that until about three days ago…

er… i meant half an hour to an hour. just clarification…
