This GarageBand is a hit
Technology 01/08/2004 |Analysts said they expect Apple’s new GarageBand music creation software to greatly benefit sales of Macs in the coming year. “You look at an application like GarageBand — you can’t get that on another platform at any price,” said Michael Gartenberg of Jupiter Media. “People will buy Macs on the basis of GarageBand.” Tim Bajarin, an analyst with market research firm Creative Strategies, also thinks the same. “GarageBand might even have more long-term effect on Apple’s sales [than the new iPod mini],” Bajarin said. “Steve has taken the consumer application layer to its next level from playing music to allowing you to be part of making music.”
(ripped shamelessly from MacMinute)

GargageBand looks cool but I think these observations are inline:
side note I do live in PC controlled Washington (like you) and I’m seriously thinking that my next computer should be a Mac (for no other reason the variation seeing that I have three Windows-based PC). Also, I’m going to get a 15GB iPod soon :-). As well as that I posted a whole lot on the MacWorld Expo and I’m getting really excited about where Mac is headed. end side note

As for the quality of the home-brewed music, Sturgeon’s Law applies here, as it does everywhere. I’d rather hear stuff by some sincere amateur than the schlock the labels are convinced we should like … .

I’d argue that even without GarageBand, there’s already far more bad music being distributed than good — and that’s from the major labels! I’m definitely in agreement with Paul’s statment that “I’d rather hear stuff by some sincere amateur than the schlock the labels are convinced we should like.” Even (and quite possibly especially) if it’s not as polished, precise, or “good” as the ultra-over-produced junk on the top-40 stations.
Heck, I’m already looking forward to the possibility of inflicting my potential compositions on the world at large, and I’m certainly no Beethoven! Heck, I’m probably not even a Britney Spears (though, truth be told, that’s probably a good thing).
Besides, if you find something you don’t like, deleting it from your hard drive isn’t terribly difficult — and who knows how many potential underground hits there might be out there that until now haven’t had a way of creating something? Me, I’m looking forward to this in a big, big way.

Oh, and it’s good to hear you’re considering a Mac for your next purchase. I’m sure it’s already fairly obvious that I’ll always support such a move (besides, as you said, you’ve already got the three PC’s!). I’ve assisted in converting three friends to the Mac so far, I’m working on one of the people I work with (she’s already in love with her iPod, after talking about what I can do with iTunes and how I use my playlists she’s going to be downloading iTunes for Windows soon, and we’ve had a few discussions about the differences between Macs and Windows…), and I’m always looking to see who else I can convert. The more the merrier, as far as I’m concerned!
