About that iPod mini
Technology 01/09/2004 |When Steve Jobs made the announcement of the iPod mini during the Macworld SF keynote, I wasn’t overly impressed.
…the biggest news on the iPod mini will be the price — no matter how happy people are about having the smaller player available, and no matter how cool it is, too many people were hoping for the $100 price point. At this point, the 15Gb full-size iPod is only $50 more than the 4Gb iPod mini…is this really going to go over well? Only time will tell, I suppose, but I have to say that I’m fairly skeptical. It’ll be a bit sketchy as to whether the smaller form factor and colors will be enough of a draw to offset the reduced capacity.
After thinking it over for a few days, though, I think I need to revise that.
See, I currently have a 2nd generation 10Gb iPod, which I bought for $399 (it was the midrange model at the time I bought it). I also have an unusually large music collection: upwards of 1200 CDs, which will take up somewhere upwards of 80Gb of space once it’s all ripped onto my computer. Even if I had the money to spring for the top-of-the-line iPod, at 40Gb it would still hold less than half of my entire music library, so I’m not in a position of being able to carry around my entire music collection with me at all times.
Because of that, I’ve been looking at how I do use my iPod — and, quite simply, I really don’t use much more than a quarter of the 10Gb that I have available to me. I’ve gone into my listening habits in more detail in the past, but essentially, I carry around one 1Gb playlist, and occasionally toss one or two other specialized playlists on when I’m in a mood to, and that’s it. Right now, I’m currently using a whopping 2.12Gb of my 10Gb iPod for music, leaving around 7Gb free.
Now, say my iPod dies (heaven forbid). The more I think about it, if I do end up in a position where I need to get a new iPod, the iPod mini is perfect for my usage habits. Sure, it’s “only” 4Gb — but when I’m more than content with using just over half that space right now, why should that bother me in the least? I could spend $50 more than the iPod mini, get the bottom rung iPod, and have 15Gb available…but chances are, I’d still only use around 2Gb of it for music, essentially wasting the other 13Gb. On the other hand, I could spend only $250 (a full $150 less than the 10Gb iPod I have now, incidentally), still have about twice the drive space than I’m likely to use, and have a smaller, lighter iPod that does everything that I use mine for now.
Sounds like a damn good deal to me.
So, contrary to my initial opinion, count me fully in the camp of the iPod mini supporters. If my current iPod ever dies — which hopefully won’t happen for quite a while yet — the iPod mini will do quite well for me.

i share your sentiments. i got my 5Gb iPod about a while after it was announced, don remind me how much it cost me then…and although i don’t have that much music as you, i also don’t normally use more than 2Gb of songs…and out of those I stored in there, i don’t listen to ALL of them ALL the time. so the iPod Mini I think is a good choice for people who wants solely a MP3 player, and not a MP3 cum portable harddisk cum media backup cum (fill in your blanks) that will require 40Gb of memory.

Good points, Michael. Whether or not anybody should buy the mini should be based on some analysis. If the small form-factor is what you want, and you don’t need the space, go for it. I just yesterday bought my first iPod: the 10GB model that the Apple Store is clearing out for $219 ($249 w/o Ed Disc). I will not fill it up with music, but as jim commented, I will use it for the other stuff: portable HD, voice recorder, simple PDA functs, etc.
To each their own, and I hope Apple has success with this. I do think that the proce will probably drop after the “new” wears off, however.

I’ve always thought that the iPod was overkill—just too much space for the average music listener. Hell, even the committed music lover would be hard-pressed to listen to all that music! 4 Gb seems just fine—it would just be alot finer if the price was a bit lower. Quite a bit, in my opinion. (Perhaps around $150 or so.)

perhaps it’s not so mini … .
About that [mini] iPod I really don’t use much more than a quarter of the 10Gb that I have available…

Good thoughts as to your personal usage analysis and how the new iPod will compliment it perfectly. But don’t you think it’s inane to a certain extent, with regard to the price? Sure I would LOVE having it, but I would rather shell out $300 for space I didnt use than $50 less for space thats 4 times less (almost)! I guess I could call that a general buyers mentality (getting more for less, or whatever), but this is what I think. It would be the best MP3 player around if, like Mr. Johnson commented, it was for somewhere around $150. The iPod is expensive. This should be a “reduction” in the full sense of the word!!

And yeah, what if I had needed so much storage as to not use it for music alone? In the sense, if I wanted some files that were really huge (and really important) with me all the time? the 7 gigs you’ve left out assume an importance now! I’ve had enough of USB keychains, flash disks, DVDs, and the like. Here’s a cute thing encompassing it all… And you know more than I do that the more the space, the merrier
Sorry for the double post…

I have to say that it seems like so many people for get that the $299 15GB iPod is stripped of all the good stuff! No case, no dock! that’s nearly $100 right there with the price of those separately.. If you took the case, better earbuds, dock and armband off the iPod mini, you would hit the $150 price point, but Apple didn’t do that, (fine by me) because they want to market this towards the people who buy the small 256MB flash players and go jogging with them.. you can’t REALLY do that with a 15GB iPod without some extra stuff like the armband and it’s just too heavy and bulky really for comfy jogging without noticing it bouncing around on you (i’ve tried with my 20GB G3 iPod).
So all I want to hear is someone acknowledge the ‘mini’s’ strengths because of the accessories it ships with, not by it’s size or colors. These are good things, but they strength is what you get in the box along with the mini. These things are worth at least $100!
You’re really getting a $150 iPod mini and $99 worth of accessories for your hard earned $249. Don’t forget about the accessories!

I agree with everyone, price is way to high

Does the mini iPod come with all the accesories (like the arm band, belt clip etc.) or do you have to buy them as extras??? because they look really good but I DON’T want to buy them!!

Hey, I need help! Ok, I’m going to buy an ipod with some left over trip money I have. I have around $270 so I could either buy an ipod mini or wait till I can cough up the extra 30+ bucks. Yu guys seem to know what your talking about, so here’s what I want to know and can’t find out from the stupid apple website. (they seem to go for a polished look rather than telling you what you’re guying…) here are my questions: 1) what does the mini Ipod come with and what does the $300 Ipod come with? 2) how many songs will 4GB hold? 3) How many songs will 15GB hold? (that’s the $300 one right?) thanks!

Hey, I just read all of your info about the IPOD mini and was wondering if any of you knew why mine will only hold about 150-200 songs? I was under the impression that it was supposed to hold around 1,000, but that has not been the case thus far. Can anyone tell me why? Thanks!
