10 Random Songs
Music 02/19/2004 |From D: Put your .mp3 collection on random, list the first 10 songs it plays. No editing allowed (though I don’t mind editorializing, myself).
Mousse T: Horny (Clean Version) from DJ Mix 2000 (1998, 3:54): One of the side effects of DJing for years was picking up a lot of CDs that I otherwise wouldn’t have — this was one of them. Actually, this track is one of the more listenable tracks from the album (which really isn’t saying much), and I can at least listen all the way through (if I’m distracted) without jumping for the “skip forward” button.
The Vienna Boys’ Choir: Heiligste Nacht from Christmas in Vienna (1991, 4:26): I actually got to meet (and sing with, if I remember correctly) one incarnation of the VBC many years ago, when they came through Anchorage and I was still a member of the Anchorage Childrens’ Choir. This is an album that normally only gets played around Christmastime, as I’m no big fan of Christmas music, especially off-season.
The Sisters of Mercy: Torch from Floodland (1987, 3:51): I couldn’t listen to SoM for the longest time, after they got heavily overplayed at Sharkey’s, one of the earliest alternative clubs in Anchorage. Lots of SoM every weekend drove me away from them after a while. A few years later, I finally got back into them, and now there’s not much SoM that I don’t enjoy.
Queen: Don’t Try Suicide from The Game (1980, 3:52): While I’m a long-time fan of Queen, this has to be one of their worst songs ever. Why is it that Grand Master Flash has been the only artist ever to come up with an anti-(bad thing of choice) song that was actually good (in this case, his anti-cocaine jam “White Lines (Don’t Do It)”)?
Madonna: Vogue (Bette Davis Dub) from Vogue (1990, 7:28): I’ve always had a lot of respect for Madonna, and generally enjoyed the music she’s put out. No matter what you may think of her or her music, she’s managed to keep herself in the headlines and put out a lot of good, solid, pop/dance music for many years now, generally doing so entirely on her own terms, whether that meant being outrageously sexual, outrageously religious, or just outrageous. The famous Madonna/Britney kiss was one of the first big indicators I’ve seen from her that she might be slipping and getting a bit desperate for press — hopefully that was just a momentary aberration.
DJ H. Geek: I Don’t Know Who I Am… from 3 Years and Counting… (1998, 10:07): DJ Geek, aka Kory, is a friend of mine that I DJ’d with for a few years at Gig’s. He went from mixing to creating his own music, and was nice enough to occasionally toss a CD of his my way. These days, I’ll be listening to something, hear a track I don’t recognize right off, think “hey, that’s good…who is it?” and realize that it’s one of Kory’s tracks. Not bad, not bad at all.
Love and Rockets: Lift (Malibu) from Resurrection Hex (1998, 4:17): As good as it is, there’s so much more to LaR than just “So Alive”. Have any of the members of Bauhaus gone on to any projects that weren’t listenable?
Deconstruction: E-Trance from Trance Sexual (1996, 5:32): Random rather forgettable trance, really. Not bad, not great. Just there.
Die Krupps: To the Hilt from Rings of Steel (1995, 4:47): Die Krupps aren’t one of my favorite industrial bands, and many of the remixes on the Rings of Steel album are more impressive than the original versions, but they’re not bad.
White Zombie: I’m Your Boogieman from The Crow: City of Angels (1996, 4:29): Cheezy, yeah. Loud, yeah. And virtually always a lot of fun. Who needs actual substance when good samples, drums, guitar work, and a healthy dose of pure attitude will do?

10 Random Tracks.
“Cruelty’s Fun” by “The Meanies” (1:12)
Great little Fun Rock Tune. I used to listen to a lot of the Meanies, when I was younger. They played live more often than any other Live Local band from that Era. Ironically. I’ve never seen them live.
“If You’re Creative, Get Stuffed” by “This Is Serious, Mum” (3:01)
Stupid Little Ditty about the Working Class Situation. TISM made lots of these songs which were not only Politically, but also Artistically Incorrect. Their live gigs are a tribute to low-brow good taste everywhere.
“Belfunk” by “Shaska” (4:33)
Just another Non-descript Trance track. Good for long drives or long Sessions on a computer
“Track 1” by “MudRayne” (1:53)
The track isn’t actually called “Track 1”, I just copied a CD for a friends daughter and forgot to delete it later on. Not to bad a track, a mix of Death Metal and Spoken Word.
“Mama” by “Hugh Masekela” (5:14)
One of my favourite tracks off the “Verve:Unmixed2” Compilation. On the “Verve: Remixed2” Compilation it has been remixed into the “Metro Area Birthday Dub”
“Blue Print” by “Jeff Mills” (4:05)
Nice bit of Trance from Jeffs Soundtrack to the Fritz Lang movie “Metropolis” The Huge Irony is that I’ve never seen the movie. They play it at my local Traditional Cinema (The Astor) every year, and I never get to see it.
“Walk All Over You” by “Downtime” (3:01)
Sydney Band doing a cover of an ACDC Song. BFW
“Gouge Away” by “Pixies” (2:43)
Pixies had some great songs, and the rumour goin’ ‘round is that they’re reforming! Will they be as good? Who Knows.
“Only You” by “Portishead” (5:02)
I love Portishead. I remembr playing “Corum III” on BeOS with his in the CD Drive, rather than the supplied Game CD and Music. I this this track is played when you’re playing a Female Character.
“Levitate Me” by “Pixes” (2:18)
This version was taken from a Live CD “Pixies at the BBC”. It isn’t as good as some of the other stuff on that Album, but still a good version

“Last Kiss” by Glassjaw (2:39)
Not exactly a soothing song. But the parts where he isn’t screaming are actually quite melodious. The guitar and bass in certain parts remind me of a Pantera song.
“Hey Tonight” by Creedence Clearwater Revival (2:42)
We’ve been practicing a few CCR songs for our department talent show, so to see this appear was a nice surprise. I used to listen to the greatest hits tape constantly when I played Dragon Warrior on the NES. How’s THAT for a throwback?
“Outside” by Deidre McCalla (3:27)
This is something my wife put on the laptop. I’ve never even heard this before. So very not my style. Easy listening with lots of studio effect instruments. I could’ve produced the music for this using GarageBand.
“Globe and Maps” by Something Corporate (4:48)
This guy’s voice reminds me of Ben Folds. This was recommended to me by a friend of mine who creates a Top 50 list every year of his favorite music (link). A typical Emo ballad.
“Calling Kylie” by Les Claypool and the Holy Makerel (3:53)
Very experimental. It’s Les Claypool… how much more can I say?
“Big Wednesday” by Freeland (4:50)
From the Animatrix Soundtrack. A nice dark techno beat. Simple stuff, but very catchy.
“Undecided” by Silverchair (4:36)
Wow. I forgot I even had this disc. I bought this in the late nineties sometime and I don’t think I ever even listened to anything other than the single that they released. iTunes Music Store prevents me from buying ‘filler’ songs now.
“Layla” by Eric Clapton (4:47)
The acoustic version that was released back in the early 90’s. This is the song that made me start listening to the radio more when I was in Junior High. Gotta love Clapton.
“Wire” by The Nixons (5:15)
Honestly never even heard this one before now. Very slow, very quiet in the beginning. Takes off after about a minute into the song. I don’t even know what to say about this…
“She’s Gone” by Hall and Oates (5:16)
Amusingly, the ID3 tag on this one had the song artist as “Haul and Oates”. sigh This is why I stopped listening to my mom’s tapes. Air Supply and Hall and Oates were the staple of my mom’s cleaning routine. This reminds me of scrubbing the kitchen floor.
