Toilet tourism

Ever wanted to use a public toilet? Usually, they’re items to be avoided, not sought out. Seattle looks to be trying to change that, though, with our new high-tech public lavatories

The doors open and close like those on an elevator. You step in. They softly seal shut behind you.

“Welcome to Seattle’s public toilet,” says the kind of voice you might hear as you board a space ride at Disneyland.[…]Tour the potties at Occidental Park in Pioneer Square, Hing Hay Park in the International District, Victor Steinbrueck Park at Pike Place Market, Waterfront Park at Pier 59 and the 1800 block of Broadway on Capitol Hill.

p>I just may have to check one of these things out at some point…just because. ;)

    Toilets of Doom

While much was made about the fancy-shmancy automated self-cleaning public toilets that popped up here in Seattle a few months ago, I’ve yet to actually give one of them a shot myself.

  1. They’re experimenting with some similar facilities in D.C.’s subway stations. It sucks to have to “go” when you’re underground and there’s no place to “go.”

  2. I have this theory that there’s an international conspiracy of radio talk show hosts. They bribe certain public officials to do something like this just so they’ll have something to talk about.

It’s the hosts’ insurance policy to cover the every-so-often slow news day.

  3. Sorry - I forgot. Tomorrow isn’t going to be a slow day for the local talk show types. Multinomah County is going to get into the same sex marriage license bidness.

The public restroom in DC is pretty cool. You should also check out the new self cleaning restroom in Atlanta, GA in the MARTA station. I hear MARTA is planning a whole lot more of these toilets. They are made in New Zealand and are light years ahead of normal old restrooms and the self cleaning ones in San Francisco. http://www.exeloo.com
