Banned Music
Links, Music March 24th, 2004 |A new site today from the people behind Grey Tuesday: BannedMusic.org.
Bannedmusic.org is a peer-to-peer collaboration that makes it impossible for the major record labels to ban or censor musical works. When record labels send legal threats to musicians, record stores, or websites, we will post the music here for download and publicize the censorship attempt. There is a clear fair use right to distribute this music, and for the public to decide whether current copyright law is serving musicians and the public, they need to be able to hear what’s being suppressed.
iTunes: “Without Words” by Hamen from the album Techno-Trax Vol. 2 (1991, 4:11).

How long until they get a letter from RIAA?

Heh… anyone else think they’re making a far too liberal interpretation of “fair use”?
I support the spirit, of course, but you never know when some copyright holder decides to do a series of lawsuits after plugging into a torrent and recording IPs being uploaded to. I’m hoping they don’t lull users into a false sense of security just because it’s distributed.

Skinned Milk: these guys have gotten legal letters already for past projects. They’re actually quite serious about being a gadfly group, raising awareness as well as hackles and taking it to the courts.

I hate to be rude, but due to the many times this has happened I have to respond. The name is Skinned Mink not Skinned Milk. I don’t have a problem with someone sampling songs from other artists. I see that as less theft than releasing a CD for sale filled with songs you didn’t write. Sampling is only using bits and pieces of music with the goal being to create something new. However, if people want paid for someone sampling their music, such as is done if someone sings someone else’s song, that’s fine with me. If it was my music I would feel honored that someone liked my music enough to sample it. Once again, that’s just me. If downhillbattle.org wants to fight legal battles with the RIAA let the court decide who wins.
