Gmail and Safari
Technology 04/03/2004 |So I got curious about Gmail, Google’s new e-mail service, and thought I’d stop by to take a look.

Somehow, I’m not very impressed so far.
Update: As it turns out, they’re in a closed beta right now, so I couldn’t have signed up in any case. Still…the lack of support for Safari — the default web browser on all new Macintosh computers — hardly leaves me with a good first impression.

While GMail may not be targeting Mac users yet, I was impressed that they plan to offer 1G mailboxes. But I’ll reserve final judgement until it finally rolls out.

They’re probably lying anyway so you can just lie to them.

True enough, Firas, but something about that bothers me if it’s not a website that I have to have access to for some reason (such as e-banking). If it’s a site that I merely want to check out…well, if they don’t want to support my browser, than I don’t have to support their site.

As a Blogger Pro early adopter, I got the invite. After signing up, I got this screen (with Safari 1.2.1) and eventually the Gmail page using the “click here” link.
“We’re sorry, but we don’t seem to be compatible.
Our software suggests that you’re using a browser incompatible with Gmail. Gmail currently supports the following:
Microsoft IE 5.5 and newer (download: Windows) Netscape 7.1 and newer (download: Windows Macintosh Linux ) Mozilla 1.4 and newer (download: Windows Macintosh Linux ) Mozilla Firefox 0.8 and newer (download: Windows Macintosh Linux )
While we’re still testing Gmail, you can also click here to use your unsupported browser, though you likely will encounter some areas that don’t work as expected. You need to have Javascript and cookies enabled, regardless of the browser you use.
We hope to expand this list in the near future and announce new platforms as they become available. In the meantime, you can install one of the supported browsers from the links above. Or you can try again from a different computer in which a supported browser is installed or add your email address to our mailing list for Gmail updates.
Gmail is a trademark of Google Inc. All other company and product names may be trademarks of the respective companies with which they are associated.”
None of the links work and when I view the page source, I get this:
“Javascript is disabled in your browser. Gmail requires Javascript to be enabled in order to operate. To use Gmail, enable Javascript by changing your browser preferences. After enabling Javascript, try again.”
Oh well, Blogger hasn’t been very Mac friendly, so my expectations were low and so was my disappointment level.

I have a beta gmail account, and it works swimmingly well with Safari. I still get the “does not currently support your browser” notification, but it works just fine. Maybe every once in a while I have to reload, but that’s probably just because it’s running off a 250K javascript file!
P.S. I didn’t put my gmail account in the email field because I don’t want it to be a spam target… but if you check my blog, you can find it there.
