Any true Scot would cringe
Life 04/05/2004 |I saw a guy walking down the street outside of the club this weekend wearing a Utilikilt “baggy style.”
With the beltline around his hips, and boxers sticking up over the waistband.
That’s just so, so wrong.
iTunes: “Trumpets of Dawn” by Discordia from the album Essential Chillout (1999, 3:41).

I’m cringing! Argh!

Hm. I think they’re great and I’d like to get one for myself actually. My heritage is Irish/Italian/French with narry a drop of Scot in me but I think it’s nice to finally see something really different in men’s fashion that’s ethnically motivated.
Fashion has long been influenced by other cultures but men outside of Scotland have often felt that kilts are nothing more than glorified skirts and have refused to wear them… well, it’s good to see that the average Joe is ready to kick that old stereotype down.
Personally, I doubt that most Scots would object either. Sure the odd one might turn up their nose but most would probably feel affirmed. And unless you stopped him to ask his heritage, shame on you for assuming he wasn’t a Scotsman. ;D

(laughs) I’m afraid you misunderstand me, Immutably. I’m not cringing at the fact that he was wearing a Utilikilt — I think they’re great, and am hoping to get one myself soon.
What got to me was the way he was wearing the Utilikilt. It’s bad enough that there are people wandering around town with their pants sagging off their butt, crotch around the level of their knees and only boxers (thankfully) preventing us from seeing their naked ass walk down the street. But to wear a kilt that way?
First off, being that a kilt, like a skirt, relies on resting atop the hips to keep from slipping off, it’s a minor miracle this person was able to walk along without losing his kilt. Secondly…well, with the boxers sticking up from under the kilt, it’s painfully obvious that he wasn’t going regimental style.

And for those that know me, I have a utilikilt. Unfortunately, the thumbnail I tried to embed in my previous post got stripped out by the post process. Here’s the link to a picture of me wearing my utilikilt to work (I’m a Network Administrator).
BTW, if you happen to buy one, I highly recommend not spending a lot of time in a raised floor data center, where the AC blows up through perforated tiles. :-p~

I live in scotland and even here what have started to see very different versions of the kilt and I think it is really great. Equality in clothing, skirts are great!

Aren’t Utilikilts more of an Irish design? I read somewhere (probably E2) that Scottish kilts have certain clan tartans, while Irish kilts are solid colors. Since Utilikilt doesn’t sell tartan’ed kilts, wouldn’t that make them more Irish in nature? I finally figured out how I can afford to purchase one, now I just have to file my taxes. Sort of need that refund first. But soon I shall have a kilt with which to wear something looser under in this hot weather (California).
Regimental = Commando?

According to the Utilikilt FAQ, there’s a very simple reason that they don’t work in plaids:
While I’d never explored the differences between Scottish and Irish kilts, it sounds like you’re right about on track…
And as for what’s under the kilt… Bingo.April 13th, 2004 at 11:11 pm
It would seem that “fox dreams” site you link to copies several nodes from E2 or those nodes are copied from it. However, the fox dreams site was last updated in 2002, whereas the E2 nodes were all created in 2000. Oi, yet again, a reader of your site uncovers some fiendish copying scheme. I messaged sleeping_wolf (creator of the E2 nodes in question) and will hopefully get a response soon. I knew that sounded too familiar.

How interesting. I’d not been on either E2 or the site I found before, I just did a quick Google for ‘irish kilt’ and poked around until I came up with something that seemed relevant. Google’s great for pretending I know what I’m talking about.

Checked it out, sleeping_wolf confirms it is his site. All is well and right in the world again, I suppose.
