TRON 2.0 for OS X
Games 04/06/2004 |While I’m still bummed that the TRON 2.0 project ended up being a game instead of a new feature film, at least the game is being released for OS X next month. I just might look into buying another computer game (I’m not much of a gamer — the last one I purchased was Star Wars Pod Racer, and I think the one before that was Oni, neither of which I ever devoted a ton of time to).
iTunes: “**** (Jungle Law)” by Love and Rockets from the album Love and Rockets (1989, 4:33).

I am considering buying a laptop from apple. I’m rather heavily into gaming but feel that I could forgo most gaming in a laptop situation. I would most likely use it for general purposes such as word processing, web access, and experimenting with garageband. Having a wireless network at my house I would like to know if the “AirPort Extreme Card” would work with a normal wireless base station. Another thing I am unsure about is what system specs are needed for an apple computer that will fit my needs. So far, I have looked almost exclusively at the low-end Ibooks. Any apple fan’s knowledge would be very helpful.
Thanks, Skinned Mink

Well, while I’ve yet to dive into the wonderful world of laptops myself, I can certainly do what I can to answer some of your questions. Of course, corrections or additions from people with more hands-on experience with iBooks or PowerBooks would definitely be appreciated!
Two out of the three things you listed (word processing, ‘net use, and GarageBand) any iBook should work quite well for — the only one I’m not entirely sure about is GarageBand. However, I might be being a bit over-cautious: Apple’s GB support page lists a 600Mhz G4 as a minimum system requirement, and the current low-end iBook sports an 800Mhz G4 (and there are reports of GB working on a 900Mhz G3), so you may be good to go there as well.
From everything I remember reading, Apple’s AirPort implementation is completely 802.11 compliant, with the original spec supporting 802.11b, and AirPort Extreme supporting both 802.11b and 802.11g. You shouldn’t have any compatibility problems with your already existing wireless network.
As far as system specs go, without knowing more about your needs, it’s a little hard to be absolutely sure. If you’re aiming primarily at writing and web surfing with an occasional dabble in GarageBand or a game here and there, I think that just about any of the iBook line should do quite well.
