Could be brilliant or horrible
Books, Film 06/18/2004 |Coming in 2005 — a new film version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Directed by Tim Burton.
Starring Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka.
Hmmmmmmm…
It’s hard for me to see anyone surpassing the inspired lunacy of Gene Wilder as Wonka, but I do tend to like Burton/Depp collaborations. Reserving judgement for now, but it could be worth keeping an eye on.

Why do they always try to remake good movies? When so many bad ones cry out to be remade correctly.
I like Burton and Depp they have a lot of talent between them, but WW&TCF is a classic and Wilder is superb in the role. Try as I may I just can’t see Depp filling Wilder’s shoes.
Don’t get me wrong I like Depp but Wilder is a genius and in my opinion a much better comedic actor. It does sound interesting and I won’t pass on the movie, but somehow I just feel in my heart that Depp can’t keep up with Wilder, I may be wrong…We’ll see.

i liked the old willy wonka too, but i found it interesting that Roald Dahl didn’t, and especially didn’t approve of Gene Wilder in the role.
i read the book as a child - it’s quite a bit more creepy and deranged than the movie was. i’m hoping burton (and johnny depp, who can complain about that??) will manage a movie more true to the book.
all your happy kiddie fantasies have already been met by the first movie, anyway.
i also read that the first choice for willie wonka was not johnny depp, but marilyn manson. ponder that one!

I too would have loved to see Manson, but my shorter, but much cuter half told me that the the family did not want Manson to play Wonka…
I think Depp will be fine, but Manson would have been fantastic
Oh well… still cant wait to see it

Hey Mike,
Long time no write (I do read you on my RSS). I have to comment on this one : What is it with this movie that people love it so much? It’s one of the creepiest films I’ve ever seen in my life.
After seeing Johnny Depp in “Before Night Falls” I cannot but think it will be even more creepy and swamped in references of pedophilia and child labor.
Is it just me or am I just weird?

That should have been “child exploitation”.

Of course it’s creepy!
The following was originally a reply to some of the questions raised in the comments discussing an upcoming Tim Burton/Johnny Depp version of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. My response became long enough that I decided to give it a pos…
