While much was made about the fancy-shmancy automated self-cleaning public toilets that popped up here in Seattle a few months ago, I’ve yet to actually give one of them a shot myself.
This is primarily because while I’ve seen more than a few people go into them…
…I’ve yet to see someone come out.
I’m convinced that they’re not really toilets at all. They’re population control. Self-contained extermination booths. The fifteen minutes that are allowed? That’s actually how long it takes for the acid showers to dissolve everything down to the bones, after which the floor opens and drops any bits that couldn’t be eaten away (watches, fillings, jewelry, etc.) down to a collection bin to be distributed to pawn shops throughout the city.
Or then again, maybe I’m just paranoid.

Used one in Sydney a few years ago. Very Steel and very Stainless. Except for the stench of Chlorine, and the fact that channels in the corrugated floor were still wet from the last cleaning, it was a quite pleasant experience. It would’ve been the highlight of my weekend away, if it wasn’t for my Psychotic Paranoid Girlfriend being outside, alone in Hyde Park in the middle of the day, scared that she was going to get mugged.
I’m with you…it just a trap!
And it’s already claimed a victim, it seem a 10 year old boy went in while his mother waited outside the boy peed and was done but the door wouldn’t open! It seems the opening of the door is triggered by weight and the poor lass didn’t weigh enough. Trapped in a urinal, a self-cleaning one no less. True they have a button inside to call 911 but nobody at 911 had any idea on how to open the damn thing. Poor kid, he’ll never use a public restroom again!
Acid showers in public toilets eh? Sounds like the making of a new sci-fi novel. Look forward to seeing Michael Hanscom in bookshops soon.
