Tattoo number two: Ouroboros
Books, Film, Life 07/28/2004 |Some time ago, I got my first tattoo: a yin-yang made of smiley faces, a design I was taken with because of the symbolism of the yin-yang (light and dark intertwined and dependent upon each other) and the incorporation of the smiley face, which I interpreted as meaning that light or dark, good or bad, there’s some good in every situation.
For some time now, I’ve been pondering what to get as a second tattoo. I didn’t want to get something merely because it “looked cool” or struck my fancy for a passing moment. Rather, I wanted to get something to both complement and balance the tattoo I already had. As the smiley yin-yang is a roughly 3 inch diameter circle on my right upper arm/shoulder, I knew I something similar on my left upper arm, but I wanted to find something that matched thematically, as well as visually.
Nothing struck my fancy for quite a few years, but off and on for the past year or so, I’ve been thinking more and more seriously about one particular design that first caught my eye when I was around eleven or so.
At that time, movies often came to Anchorage months after they had wide release in the lower 48. I’d seen trailers on television for a new fantasy movie that looked incredibly cool: The Neverending Story. However, the movie just didn’t ever seem to come out, and I eventually went out and picked up the book by Michael Ende.
I completely and entirely fell in love with the book (and later was somewhat disappointed by the movie when it eventually hit Anchorage — it’s enjoyable and a lot of fun on its own, but it only covers the first half of the book, ignores roughly half of that, and scrambles what little is left), but the cover of that edition of the book featured stills from the movie, and had Atreyu’s amulet, the Auryn, featured prominently on the front cover.
The Auryn in the film was actually a stylized version of an Ouroboros: while the traditional Ouroboros is a single snake consuming its own tail, the Auryn was designed as two intertwined snakes, one light and one dark, each consuming the other’s tail.
The symbol has stuck with me ever since then, and more and more often as of late, it’s been popping into my head as what I’d like to get to complement the tattoo I already have. I spent a little time this morning trying to find good images and information on the symbol — something of a difficult task, unfortunately, as there are quite a few possible spellings of Ouroboros — but have found a bit of each. I’m not sure if I’ve found an image that’s clean enough for me to give to a tattoo artist yet, but I did confirm some of what I’d already believed of the symbolism of the Ouroboros:
> The ouroboros has several meanings interwoven into it. Foremost is the symbolism of the serpent biting, devouring, eating its own tail. This symbolises the cyclic Nature of the Universe: creation out of destruction, Life out of Death. The ouroboros eats its own tail to sustain its life, in an eternal cycle of renewal. In the above drawing, from a book by an early Alchemist, Cleopatra, the black half symbolises the Night, Earth, and the destructive force of nature, yin. The light half represents Day, Heaven, the generative, creative force, yang.
So it looks to me like we’ve got a winner. Now, the search is on for a good, clean image that will work well as a black-and-white tattoo. Once that’s done, it’ll be time to get inked again!
“Behind the Wheel” by Kirk from the album Trancemode Express 1.01: A Tribute to Depeche Mode (1996, 7:30).

Love the idea of getting the Auryn as a tattoo! I read the book a couple years ago, after having loved the (first) movie since I was a small child, but I didn’t like it much. Actually, it made me feel depressed and I had a hard time plowing through the later part of it. it was probably more my state of mind back then than anything… I should pick it up again.
I have five tats, all B&W, all old-fashioned and femme. 1)crescent moon w/whispy clouds and stars on lower, outer, right ankle; 2) butterfly under bellybutton; 3) another crescent moon with vines & flowers wrapped around it on lower, right side of back; 4) a bettie page style girl, lounging in a martini glass and smoking a cigarette, from which smoke puffs up into the top half of a banner that ribbons behind her and continues across the stem of the glass which reads, “Man’s Ruin”, also has some bubbles and a pair of dice sitting at the base of the glass, outer left thigh; and 5) a rose in which is hidden a fertility goddess, outer left bicep.
I have several more planned, but my next one will be a fawn, as realistic as possible, with my daughter’s name (Velouria Enid) written underneath it in ridiculously pretty, loopy, cursive script. I LOOOOOVE little deer

I’ve been calling my fork of feed on feeds ouroboros…I like the imagery of it myself. didn’t even think of the Neverending Story connection….
I think the image in the wikipedia entry is rather nice, tho perhaps a little too old-fashioned for your tastes. I used it as the background image for my app.
a friend of mine had an infinitely looped snake tattoo, sort of a celtic look, that might be up your alley…I should email him & see if he has a picture.

Kirstin — You? With a Betty Page tattoo? Never in my life would I have expected that!
(Yes, I’m very kidding.)
Five so far, with several more planned…they are addicting, aren’t they? I’ll probably never get that many, simply because I tend to take years to decide on each one (literally — my first was about two years of “I think I want a tattoo,” followed by three years of “I think this is what I want,” before I finally got it).
Elaine — I do like the older, more traditional styles, but not quite enough for use as a tattoo. I’d certainly be curious about the celtic version your friend has, though — both Celtic and tribal style tattoos have always caught my eye.

The Neverending Story is one of my favorite books. And yes, the movie (and its sequels) are incredibly disappointing once you’ve read it. I would also suggest you look for Momo, another wonderful book by Michael Ende and, as far as I can tell, the only other one he wrote that was translated to English.
As far as the tattoo, I love your first one, and I agree that this is an excellent way to balance it out. I’ve always loved the idea of getting one that really means something to you rather than whatever tickles your fancy at the moment. You can easily see the end result of such decisions with a friend of mine. She proudly displays the Green Witch completely covering her right upper arm and shoulder, but tries to cover up the little symbol of a punk band she got on her hand years ago.
You’ve got great taste there, and now I’ll just sulk in my jealousy - someone else always beats me to the good ideas.

Amusingly enough, I was just talking about this with Prairie last night — Momo is a wonderful book! I picked it up sometime after first reading The Neverending Story simply because they were by the same author — unfortunately, my copy disappeared many years ago, after I loaned it to a friend and never got it back.
Looking at Amazon, it appears that there may be a few more Ende books available in English: The Night of Wishes and Mirror in the Mirror are both listed, though the latter is only available used, starting at around $47; Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver looks to be entirely out of print and unavailable.
Still, at least a few more exist…I’ll have to start remembering to keep an eye out for them at the local used book stores.
I obviously strongly agree with putting some thought into a tattoo — to me, it seems like a no-brainer, as short of getting laser dermatology (that’s a fascinating article, by the way), you’re going to be stuck with it for the rest of your life. I’ve seen far too many people with spur-of-the-moment tattoos, usually something “trendy” or otherwise depressingly common (Taz, mistranslated kanji, stars [what is the deal with this one anyway? I see it everywhere these days], etc.), and while they may be “cool” at the moment, I really wonder what the bearer is going to think in another five or ten years.
Myself, I’d much rather spend a good few years turning over ideas in my head so that I know I’ve got something that I’m not going to regret having etched into my skin somewhere down the line — something that has some amount of personal significance, along with being visually distinctive. I actually waffled for a bit with my current idea because it’s not entirely original, but as it’s not that common and it meshes well with the one I already have, that’s a relatively minor concern in the end.

Genius!!!
I have been on almost exactly the same search (although I lack the original smiley ying/yang!). I have always wanted a snake to represent my nature (and the year I was born, I suppose) and something spiritual/metaphysical, so the ouroboros seemed a likely choice. Yet, Scully from the X-Files had an ouroboros and, given I am a science geek, it seemed to sciencey and geeky. But the Auryn, of course!!! I loved The Neverending Story (the book…and the first film).
Let us know how you go, and post pictures if you have it done or find a interesting take on the design. I’ll keep reading your excellent blog.
Cheers.

Oh dear. This is exactly why I want this:
http://userpic.livejournal.com/18109800/1435759
and I decided that on Friday.
Same reason that you have, basically. My name means beautiful serpent and I found that image. I’ll have to find you on aim/yahoo - I’m so weirded out now! :O

the ouroboros is also featured in conan as the symbol of conans enemys clan the symbol is a powerfull symbol with deep and profound meaning that is why i am looking into it as a tattoo to border 2 other circular a tattoo is a big step but if the tattoo is good enough and has meaning to you i say go for it tattoo’s are much cooler than plain old skin any day… i dont think of it as “you are going to live with your tattoo for the rest of your life” i think your going to live with your skin for the rest of your life its better to personalize it

This is the same tatt I’ve always wanted. The aspect that appeals to me is that of the two realities, reality and fiction, both the same, both nothing, that coexist in an eternal realm of timless unreality.
I couldn’t believe that so many people have it as a tatt already. I’m getting mine done asap.

I have been trying to think of a tattoo. Was thinking of an infinity / 8 shaped ouroboros. The number 8 is very significant to me, as are the symbolism of the snake (scorpio, soul of the departed, etc). Then I came across the auryn which is basically a really cool looking ouroboros, and I think I’m going to get it as my first tattoo, but I will have it rotated 90 degrees so you can see the number 8 in it.
Now I’m just trying to decide how to make the snakes different, maybe one shaded black and the other as the inverse. Or put different patterns along the body of the snakes.

I’ve had a tattoo of the Auryn-although it’s rather large on my lower back and in blazing color. I’m fairly pale so my tat artist talked me out of getting it in silver & bronz. Have you thought of going to a good custom artist and having it freestyled? This way you only need to show him a rough idea of what you want and you can work out the details together.
I met a random person last night with the same tattoo (in silver & bronz) & it’s fairly unusual so I’m off to do my internet search for auryn tattoos. Good luck!

Must confess i too thought it was perfect symbol if ever to get a tattoo Still i think we all have good reasons for choosing Auryn as indelible art on body I dont think enough of us will have it down for it to become passe` (except Melanie, freak coincidence i’m sure)

I just recently got a freestyle tat done at the base of my neck of the Auryn. The best pick that I could find was a still that I took myself off the movie. All the ones that I have found on the net just didn’t seem to look good

I just found an amazing ouroboros tattoo design at http://www.deviantart.com by an artist named Saki BlackWing. Gorgeous design, bigger than I wanted, but nice style to it.

I’m guessing this is the one you’re talking about, Karin. Quite nice!

This is really amazing that there are so many looking for the same design. I had a design in my mind but didn’t know it had a name. I too have a affinity for the infinity symbol and the snake as I am born August 8 in the chinese year of the snake. So for this next birthday being a 888 day I decided to get a tatoo of an Ouroboros. I want three intertwined over sun backdrop. The Trinity of Infinity.

I actually just got an Auryn tattoo on my back between my shoulder blades. If you email me I’d be happy to send you an image once I get one uploaded onto my computer.

hi… first of all i want to say that im mexican so pleae excuse my mistakes writting You wont believe this my name is auryn!, my mother gave it to me as a simbol of several things, like if u want something in this life you’ll have to give something up(the way bastian had to loose a memory), and the more i read the more i love this meaning of live recicing all the time.. even within ourselfs…this idea of constant chance is really my way of living.. thats why i’ve being seriously thinking about getting the auryn tattoed in my lower back and its being really nice finding out that so many people like the meaning as much as i do..

too funny. i want a ourosboros tattoo with two dragon (snakes, dragons, not much difference from a mythological standpoint) heads eating each other’s tales. never noticed the one in the ‘neverending’ story ‘till now.
still working on the the design. i have a japanese-style dragon on my upper left chest. my plan is to use a similar style for the dragon heads in the ouroboros tattoo. although, i do like some of the phoenician ourosboros designs.

My sister and I wanted very much to get an auryn tattoo together because we love the movie, the book and the meaning. We found an interesting version of the image on the front of the dvd set of The Neverending Story films (the other 2 suck by the way) You should check it out, by the way did you ever get your tattoo?

Your tatto artist should be able to come up with something nice by giving him or her this link: http://www.crystalinks.com/ouroboros.html If he or she can’t draw something for you, go to someone else even if you have to pay more ( make sure there an artist not just someone who can trace). My ouroboros tattoo wil be a classic japanese style dragon eating it’s own tail looped in a figure 8. Inside one of the hole of the figure 8 will be something that shows the smallest scale of life( quarks or smaller). The other will have something that shows the big scale (universe).
