Sean Bonner: “Imminent” Terrorist Attack?
I have a friend with a job that makes certain Police Department memos things he needs to take note of. This is the one he got this morning. I’ve known this person for a very long time and I’m vouching for it’s authenticity:
Subject: FW: Terrorist Attack on US Soil is Imminent Importance: High
LAW ENFORCEMENT SENSITIVE At the meeting of the Southern District of the Anti-Terrorism Advisory Council (ATAC) that was held yesterday in Houston, US Attorney Michael Shelby informed the group that a terrorist attack of 09/11/01 proportions was going to be carried out on US soil within the next 6 weeks. Mr. Shelby stated that on 09/13/04, US Attorney General John Ashcroft had a conference call with all 93 US Attorneys, an event which is extremely rare. The US Attorneys were informed that without a doubt an attack was going to be perpetrated in the US within the next 6 weeks, prior to the elections. Mr. Shelby urgently requested that all law enforcement be aware of any situation that may be out of the ordinary and report the activity immediately. Mr. Shelby also requested that we get the word out to patrol officers and detectives to talk to their informants and report anything odd or remotely suspicious. Mr. Shelby ended this warning by saying that unless we get a bit of “luck” and the attack can be detected and prevented, that another attack of 9/11 scale will be carried out. CNN: Sen. Dayton closes Capitol Hill office over terror worries
A Democratic senator said he will close his Capitol Hill office until after the November 2 election, fearing a possible terrorist attack that could harm his staff or visitors.
Sen. Mark Dayton of Minnesota issued a statement Tuesday, citing a “top-secret intelligence report on our national security” provided to congressional members by Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tennessee. “Based upon that information,” Dayton wrote, “I have decided to close my office in the Russell Senate Office Building until after the upcoming election.

I’m so skeptical and so suspicious of anything Ashcroft does, says or even thinks or feels. How do we know this isn’t some ploy by Ashcroft to scare people through their local law enforcement officials into voting for Bush? We don’t. I am going to discount this completely. I don’t doubt that the information is as you printed and that your well-placed friend received it on the up-and-up. I doubt, though, that the real meaning of transmitting this message has anything at all to do with any real intelligence reports portending an upcoming Taliban or other terrorist attack.
How cynical am I. Cynical enough to not believe one word of anything which comes from this Administration. That’s how far they’ve pushed the truth in the past four years.
Watch - there’ll be nothing.
Quite honestly, Chas, I’m pretty much in the same boat on this one. Interesting enough to be worth mentioning, but I’m not exactly about to go all Chicken Little about it.
Besides — whether or not anything happens, there’s not really a lot I can do aside from wait and see.
That, and vote in about three weeks.
I Live in a Country which just had Elections, in Which the Current Government used the Threat of Interest Rate Rises to Scare the Populous into Re-electing them, and I empathise with you. There are three Scenarios which I can see;
Report is accurate and Terrorist’s want to Highlight the Destruction which Your Current Government has Wrought on the World. They want the Populous to Vote your Current Government out and a more Compassionate Government in.
Report is false Scare-mongering to encourage the Populous to Vote in favour of a Militant Government.
Report is Scare-mongering, but the Event, which will occur in the specified time period, is Fabricated, a-la The Long Kiss Goodnight.
The end result really depends on the Spin the Political Parties put on it. Number 2 would probably be the most successful (and the least desirable by most of your Readers). Number 1 and 3 really depend on the Media either Publishing the Terrorists Statement, or Publishing any leaked Documents which may provide the truth. Considering that your Media is already as corrupt as a Floppy Disk, I don’t like your Chances

Ugh, Daniel, your use of capitalization makes my brain hurt.
But anyway… I’m hoping there are no crazy terrorist problems in Washington, for both humanitarian reasons and for purely personal reasons - I am going to DC the week after the election, and that kind of craziness can definitely muck things up.
