Michael,
I am not sure that I want this. Granted the 60gb model would be nice as I am on the road so much and have max’d out my 40GB model… but what I love about my iPod is its simplicity, its cleanliness, and I think that this is the first step to make the iPod do everything including make toast, coffee and kiss you g’night.
Along the same lines of why I prefer a Palm over a WinCE device… I do not need a full blown computer to keep my addresses and appointments … I don’t need my mp3 player to be a photo album, nor my camera to play mp3s
To each their own… but I like the almost low-tech edge to the current Pods… beautiful, easy, simple and great at playing music
Also… who has the ca$h to keep up with this 6mos cycle of updates? feh!
True — generally, I’m also much more in the “do one thing and do it well” camp, and I can be pretty sure that I’d use the music side of the iPod far more than the photo side. But I like the idea, it’s still fairly simple (though it does seem odd to me that photo syncing is taken care of through iTunes rather than iPhoto or iSync), and the metadata geek in me likes the “now playing” album art display.

Certainly not me — but then, in a sense, that’s also the single biggest reason I’m dreaming about upgrading. I’ve currently got a 2nd Gen iPod (10Gb, touchwheel w/buttons around the wheel) that’s showing its age: Apple hasn’t substantially upgraded the firmware in a long time, so I don’t have some of the new features that newer iPods do (on-the-fly playlists and ratings, text notes, etc.); it’s more grey than pristine white (though some careful cleaning work would help that, admittedly); and — most importantly — the battery is starting to go downhill (I’m currently getting around 2 1/2 to 3 hours per charge…not bad when I’m taking 40 minute bus rides, but very noticeable when I’m trying to use the iPod to provide me with music 8 hours a day at work).
I tend to go as long as I can between upgrading my hardware, and because of that, I try to get as close to the top of the line as I can (my last ‘puter upgrade was from a 350Mhz G3 to a dual 2Ghz G5) — not only is it FUN, but it also helps ensure that the new hardware will last as long as I need it to (and heck, that G3 is still quite useful as my webserver).
Oh, one last thought re: Palm vs. WinCE (gotta love that acronym).
Don’t really know much about WinCE gadgets, but for a while, I had a Palm. Over time, I realized that I rarely, if ever, put any information into it on the fly. Any edits or changes I had to do, I’d do at home, then sync to the Palm. Essentially, I was using it as a read-only device.
Then I got my iPod. Since it syncs with Address Book (contacts, addresses, phone numbers) and iCal (appointments) and plays all my music, suddenly that Palm got a lot less use. I think I still have it in a drawer around here somewhere…

So for me, the iPod Photo is worth drooling over.
The thing is…I’m still broke.
Dammit.
