The Incredibles

The IncrediblesTook Prairie out to see The Incredibles today — my second time, her first. As I said before, Pixar can do no wrong, and the movie was just as good the second time. Possibly better, as I caught a couple lines and gags that I’d missed the first time through.

Some mild spoilers follow, so they’re going behind the cut… I really think that my favorite sequences in the film are all in the battle on the island. Not only is it an incredibly well-done action sequence, but the real joy in it is seeing Dash and Violet realize just what they can do with their powers, from the “hamster ball” of Violet’s forcefield to Dash’s sudden giggle of exhilaration when he discovers that he’s fast enough to actually run across water.

Prairie got a big kick out of the entire movie, but I think one of the biggest laughs I heard from her stems from her background in education, when Bob and Ellen are fighting and Bob rants a bit about the “graduation” from 4th to 5th grade — “They keep finding more ways to celebrate mediocrity!” Sadly, very true.

All in all, far and away one of the best flicks I’ve seen this year.

iTunesPresence of the Lord” by Blind Faith from the album Crossroads (1969, 4:48).

  1. Saw it with Adam at the 9 pm show at Pacific Place Saturday. Fantastic flick - better than all 3 Batman movies combined. We both laughed - Adam’s comment before going was “I don’t think a Disney movie will be that good.” My retort was to cite from your early review that “I know someone who’s just as twisted as me and he thought it was great.” Well, you win - Adam thought it was great - as did I and like u I’d like to see it again. My favorite part was the suit designer - who’s she a take-off of? I know I’ve seen that woman before.

Normally, I’d agree — with the sole exception of Pirate of the Caribbean, Disney’s output has been amazingly lackluster for quite a while now — but the trick here is that it’s not a Disney film. It’s a Pixar film with Disney’s logo slapped onto it (and their merchandising muscle behind the advertising). I’m very interested to see what happens if/when Pixar finally breaks out of their contract with Disney (their next film, Cars, is the last in their contract, and they’ve been in some intense negotiations for a while, though I haven’t heard of a resolution yet).

I’m not sure if she’s a direct take off of any one person, though I could be wrong. She struck me much more as an exaggerated stereotype of a Fashion Diva. Incidentally, did you catch that she was voiced by the director, Brad Bird?

Actually, Edna (the costume designer) might be atake off of someone, but I find it most interesting thst she was voiced by Brad Bird who is both the writer and director of The Incredibles.

Oh, and Woody, did you catch that part in the brginning when Buddy is introduced and Mr. Incredible is trying to remember his name? One of the names he lists is Brodie which is a reference to the Mallrats character played by Jason Lee who was the voice of Buddy.

Did you follow that? Cause I think I confused myself writing it. lol oh, well

  4. (laughs) Yeah, I followed. I didn’t catch the “Brodie” reference on my first viewing, but I got a good laugh out of it the second time around.

  5. Chas — re: Edna Mode — Nate has a good theory:

I’ve been wracking my memory banks to try and figure out who the character of Edna Mode was alluding to from popular culture. I knew I’d seen her before and I now I think I’ve figured it out. She is based on diminutive actress Linda Hunt’s portrayal of fashionista Regina Krumm in Robert Altman’s Prêt-à-Porter.
