100 Overlooked Films of the ’90s
Film December 8th, 2004 |I stumbled across this list of the 100 most overlooked films of the 1990’s yesterday, meant to do a meme-style “seen it” list, and then spaced it. I was reminded today when DeAnna beat me to the punch — so here’s mine. Bold title films I’ve seen…
- Miller’s Crossing (Been meaning to see this one for ages.)
- Safe
- The Sweet Hereafter
- Lone Star
- Heavenly Creatures (Another that’s been on my “need to see” list.)
- Waiting for Guffman (So far, I’ve really enjoyed all of Guest’s mockumentaries that I’ve seen.)
- The Hudsucker Proxy (One of my favorites.)
- Babe: Pig in the City
- Dead Man (Another that’s been on my “need to see” list.)
- Fearless
- Bound (Though it’s been a long time, I remember enjoying it.)
- Chungking Express
- The Straight Story
- Searching for Bobby Fischer
- Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai
- That Thing You Do!
- Dead Again (Quite the fun little thriller, and it’s fun to see Branagh and Thompson in something non-Shakespearean.)
- Sneakers
- Zero Effect
- The Butcher Boy
- Truly, Madly, Deeply
- In the Company of Men
- Devil in a Blue Dress
- The Red Violin (Beautiful film.)
- Cemetery Man
- Hamlet (This so needs to come out on DVD.)
- Breakdown
- Welcome to the Dollhouse (This one, I don’t remember liking at all. Maybe I need to give it another chance someday?)
- The Apostle
- Eve’s Bayou
- Hard Eight
- Defending Your Life
- A Little Princess
- Bringing Out the Dead
- Fireworks
- Jacob’s Ladder (Hated this the first time I saw it, then watched it again and saw everything I missed the first time. Great film.)
- The Spanish Prisoner
- Pump Up The Volume (Talk Hard! Love this one. And I really need more women coming on to me like the girl in here does….)
- Beautiful Girls
- The Double Life of Veronique
- Very Bad Things (One of the blackest comedies I’ve seen. Love it, and own it.)
- Richard III (Another one that really needs to be on DVD.)
- October Sky
- Strange Days (Had me really freaked about the Y2K turnover for a while.)
- My Neighbor Totoro (I want a catbus!)
- L.A. Story (Surreal and cute romantic comedy don’t always go together, but they work well here.)
- Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
- A Bronx Tale
- The Limey
- A Perfect World
- Before Sunrise
- Bob Roberts (One of my favorite political comedy/mockumentaries. Own it.)
- Dick
- Raise the Red Lantern
- One False Move
- The Ref (Another wonderful black comedy.)
- Exotica
- Sonatine
- Joe Versus the Volcano
- Matinee (Saw it when it was in the theatre, and don’t really remember much of it.)
- The Ice Storm
- The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (“Oh, that’s the last thing we need. A cock. In a frock. On a rock.”)
- Croupier
- The Winslow Boy
- Girl on the Bridge
- Bullet in the Head
- Darkman (Been ages since I’ve seen it, but remember enjoying it more than I expected.)
- Cannibal! The Musical
- Fast, Cheap & Out of Control
- Smoke (All I really remember is thinking that it was interesting…should re-rent it sometime.)
- The Last Days of Disco
- Fresh
- Eye of God
- Flirting With Disaster
- Bottle Rocket
- Ashes of Time
- Fallen Angels
- Great Expectations
- Kundun
- A Midnight Clear
- Deep Cover
- Ravenous
- Twin Falls, Idaho
- The People vs. Larry Flynt (Another one I don’t really remember.)
- Quick Change
- The Secret of Roan Inish
- Beloved
- Big Night (This one’s been on my “need to see” list since I fell in love with The Impostors.)
- Topsy-Turvy
- Living in Oblivion
- Jesus’ Son
- Glengarry Glen Ross (Didn’t like it at all when I saw it — another one to give another chance.)
- Chaplin (Loved this one.)
- Dead Alive (Another that’s been on my “need to see” list.)
- Jude
- Cradle Will Rock
- Proof
- The Wonderful, Horrible Life of Leni Riefenstahl
- Titus (So, so good.)
- Mystery Men (Much better and funnier than I expected it to be.)
Wow — that’s kind of depressing, actually. Figured I’d have seen more than a quarter of them (just over, actually, at 28). Looks like I’ve got a lot to add to my Netflix queue!
“Crablouse, The (Sample to the Lab)” by Lords of Acid from the album Crablouse, The (1994, 8:34).

I don’t know about that list. Of those that I’ve seen (30%?), I’d say most of them were enjoyable, but nothing special.
In my opinion, though, October Sky is by far the best film on the list. It really is excellent. And I don’t think it would be on the “overlooked” list if only it were named “Rocket Boys,” like they were originally planning.

Great. My Netflix queue just got a lot larger.

Dead Man- people either love this movie or hate it. It isn’t for everyone, as Jarmush films are not for everyone. That said, I love this film. I find it haunting and amusing. If you are not familiar with Jarmush, I would likely start with Down by Law or Night on Earth.
Welcome to the Dollhouse- I liked this one, although I have found that me and Todd Solondz do not get along. After Storytelling, it will take a lot to get me to see another of his films.
A few you might consider renting-
Babe: Pig in the City- this film was nothing like the original defying everyone’s expectations. It is a lot of fun and has much in common with Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s films (Amelie, Delicatessen). Very dark and enjoyable film that is visually stunning.
Flirting with Disaster- I love David O-Russel and this might be my favorite of his films. I highly recommend all of his films (Spanking the Monkey, I ♥ Huckabees, Three Kings).
Anything by Wong Kar Wai- Several of his films appear on this list (Ashes of Time, Fallen Angels, Chungking Express), but the one that blows me totally away is a 2000 film, In the Mood for Love. All of his films are a visual spectacle and he is among my favorite chinese directors (Zhang Yimou is the other). I think you would really like Fallen Angels as it is dark, erotic, and has an amazing soundtrack.
And Mamet’s films. His dialog is amazing and his plots are totally unique with all kinds of unexpected twists and turns, that are not gimmicky like Shyamalan tends to be. Spanish Prisoner I have on video, but would also recommend Spartan, State and Main, and Oleanna.
Nate has been creating a list of dozens of films that are not on this list that we feel should be. I’m worried that over time, we may end up with our own top 100 films of the 90s.

Interesting! From that list there, I can pick out a few noticeables, such as Tom Hank’s “That Thing You Do!” (which was excellent; I even learnt how to play the song on the piano, even though I wasn’t supposed to) and “Defending Your Life,” which was a pretty top-notch film with lots of excellent acting by the two lead characters. I’d actually like tosee a modern interpretation of that.
Oh yeah, Hamlet must be released on DVD. Would be a gross misunderstanding/understatement if it wasn’t!

I’d highly recommend Dead Man; there’s a scene in the first 15 minutes with the Johnny Depp & Crispin Glover characters on a train that ranks in my top five most impressive movie direction moments ever.
Ravenous is a good one too. If you don’t mind movies about cannibalism, that is.

Top 100 Overlooked Films of the 1990s
Another list of movies has appeared, this time the Online Film Critics Society’s “Top 100 Overlooked Films of the 1990s”. Michael at eclecticism and his friend DeAnna started a meme (oh my). I’ve cleaned up the list, and changed the links to the films’…
