New camera!
Life, Photography 01/30/2005 |The day finally came when I had enough funds available to replace the camera I lost nearly a year ago.
My new toy: a Canon PowerShot A95. I’ve only had it for about a day now — Prairie and I picked it up yesterday — so I’ve still got a lot of leaning to go, but so far, I’m very happy with my new lil’ toy. Small enough to fit in a pocket, so I’ll be able to carry it around with me all the time and have it handy at a moments notice, solidly built, lots of options and buttons to learn, a handy little flip-screen display, and 5 megapixel resolution.

Plus, this lil’ guy can even take short video clips! This was something I had to play with, so I made a short little one-minute movie taking a look at a silly little M&M dispenser that Prairie got me. iMovie was able to compress it down to about 1.5Mb, so it shouldn’t take too terribly long to download. There’s not much to it — mostly just me being silly — but it was certainly worth a few minutes of playing around.
Hooray for new toys!
Oh, and Rick — you can come pick up your camera now. Many, many thanks for letting me borrow it for nearly a year!

Congrats! One word of advice: if you’re going to pocket it, make sure that you’ve got a good cover/case for it. I learned this the hard way.
When the volume of the lens changes while zooming, it must take in air — and this means that dust can get inside the lens. Getting this dust out is a real PITA — Canon has to do it because the auto-focus has to be readjusted after they crack the lens.
I kept my S400 in my jeans pocket, and my pictures now have black splotches of dust. Still better than no camera in some ways, but irritating.
I haven’t sent the camera in yet; I’m debating whether or not to just get a newer one — especially when the camera guy here in Anchorage told me that it would probably be $100+ to do the work, plus shipping/insurance.
Caveat photographor.

Good to know, thanks! The A95 isn’t quite small enough to be pants-pocketable, though it is jacket-, kilt- and cargo-pocketable. That might avoid some of the dust issue, but finding a little soft case for it definitely wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Congrats! Long live Canon.

Cool camera!
And did you really need more M&M’s?

There’s no such thing as too many M&M’s.

Woo-hoo, new camera! My wife has the A95 predecessor, and I’m always impressed by how good it is. Using the flip-screen to take overhead shots is awesome.
The M & M video was great, I laughed all through it—probably because it seemed the M & M guy wasn’t puking right!

Hey Michael, I am also looking forward buying an A95. A few questions: what is your experience with batteries? what brand/kind are you using? charger? How long does charging takes?
I’m looking forwards buying this from amazon, I have heard 2500mAh NiMH long much more than any others.

I may have to get back to you on the battery question in a few days. At the moment I’m still on the (non-rechargeable) batteries that were included in the box, and believe it or not, I actually haven’t picked up a charger and rechargeable batteries yet. I’ve meant to for a long time, but I’ve also found that Energizer’s e2 Lithium batteries last an incredibly long time, so often I’ll just grab a pack of those while I’m out and about. Pricey (and the rechargeables would probably be cheaper in the long run), but worth it when you’re on the go and don’t have any juice.

Ok Michael, well, the moment you begin researching for rechargeable batteries, consider the battery/charger pack I linked in my previous post, and if you find a better deal (obviously, considering quality) keep us updated…
