It’s only domestic violence if you’re straight March 31, 2005
More news from Ohio regarding their ridiculous approach towards domestic violence. The law is being updated to close the loophole that limits domestic violence charges to married couples, which sounds good — but all’s not well yet.

Search Engine Wars March 29, 2005
Statcounter has introduced a new section to the statistics they track titled ‘Search Engine Wars’ — it’s a graph of how much traffic your site gets from each search engine. Out of the last 1,100 hits to my site, here’s what it shows me.

Jello Über Alles March 27, 2005
This week’s This American Life had a fascinating look at Michael Guarino, the prosecuting lawyer in the 1986 obscenity trial against Jello Biafra and the Dead Kennedys over their Frankenchrist album and the H. R. Giger print included with it.

How many times were you a minor? March 27, 2005
On a lighter note, while this news story isn’t really something to laugh at, it has a wonderful example of bad writing that made me laugh…

It’s only domestic violence if you’re married March 27, 2005
Here’s a jaw-dropping, ‘holy shit’ item: in Ohio, beating someone you live with is only domestic violence if you’re married, and the justification used for this is Ohio’s constitutional ban on same-sex marriages.

Marilyn Monroe March 27, 2005
Up until last week sometime, I’d never actually seen a Marilyn Monroe film. I knew who she was, of course, and had seen the occasional brief clip from one film or another here and there, but I had yet to actually watch any of her work.

They used to be funny… March 27, 2005
When did Steve Martin stop being funny? It had to be sometime after 1991, when he wrote and starred in one of my personal favorite films, L.A. Story.

Small Pets Allowed March 27, 2005
As Prairie and I are planning on getting a place together in a few months, we’ve started occasionally flipping through ‘For Rent’ listings to see what’s available in our price range around town. Yesterday, one of the listings caught my eye. ‘Hey — ‘small pets allowed, up to 20 pounds.’ We could get forty hamsters!’

Photo Flood Finished March 24, 2005
I’ve finished uploading older photographs into my Flickr account for now. I’ve been concentrating on bigger ‘event’ things to put into sets, rather than everyday stuff. New sets since the previous update: The Jensonia Hotel fire, Kevin and Emily’s wedding, Bumbershoot ‘03, Pride Day ‘03, Bumbershoot ‘02, Bumbershoot ‘01, and Pride Day ‘01.

One cute shot from last summer’s Folklife festival, slightly Photoshopped — and one companion shot that amused me.

How to Blog (Annotated) March 23, 2005
Shamelessly stealing an idea from Tvindy, I’m going to take a look at Tony Pierce’s recently posted ‘How to Blog’ post and contribute my thoughts on his advice. Because I have no original ideas of my own.

Photo Flood March 23, 2005
Yesterday I realized that while my Flickr Pro account allows me up to 1Gb of uploads each month, I haven’t been using anywhere near that much — so I decided to fix that.
Three new sets from 2004 are up: Bumbershoot, the Gay Pride parade, and the Fremont Solstice Festival.Posted in Life, Photography.

Which religion? March 22, 2005
I know I’m not going to have time to really go as much into this as I’d like while I’m on my lunch break, but I found an interesting little online quiz through Subzero Blue: Which religion is the right one for you? Apparently I test as an agnostic.

The Last Unicorn March 21, 2005
I have no idea what the status of this is, how close to completion it may or may not be, or whether it will actually ever see the light of day — but there’s a live action version of Peter S. Beagle’s The Last Unicorn (previously produced in animated form) in production.

I can’t stop yawning March 21, 2005
Just to follow up on my whining on the last post, I didn’t fall asleep until sometime after 3am — and my alarm goes off at 6am. So now I get to run the entire day on something less than three hours of sleep.

ecto powered March 21, 2005
I’ve been using and recommending ecto for quite some time now, but as long as Adriaan’s starting to run a weekly ‘ecto powered blog’ showcase, I figured I might as well make it a little more obvious and pop a ‘Powered by ecto’ badge into my sidebar. Who knows if he’ll ever actually showcase me, but it’s worth a shot, right?

It’s official: Flickr now part of Yahoo! March 20, 2005
The rumors were true, as it turns out, and the official announcement was made today on the FlickrBlog: Yahoo actually does acquire Flickr. While I’m sure this is good news for both Yahoo! and Flickr, I have to admit that in some ways, I’m a little less than thrilled that Yahoo! is the winning buyer.

Gnomedex comes to Seattle March 20, 2005
It appears that Gnomedex, one of the big blog/tech/geek/pick-a-descriptor conferences is coming to Seattle this summer, and Julie’s going to be speaking. Congrats, Julie! I’d love to go, but it’s out of my budget this year.
