One of the highlights of Norwescon is the award dinner for the annual Philip K. Dick Award for distinguished science fiction published in paperback original form in the United States. For the second year running, I’ve purchased and read each of the nominated books. What follows are the brief reviews I posted to Goodreads as I finished each book.
Blurry Boundaries
Honestly, I’m not entirely sure just where the boundary between ‘acceptable’ and ‘unacceptable’ violence lies for me. I like my horror creepy and/or with a good dose of humor mixed in. Today’s trend towards ultra-violent torture porn just makes me feel ill.

Ranking Bond
One of the gifts I got for Christmas was the 50th anniversary James Bond collection on Blu-ray. While it will take a while to get through them all, I figured I’d start ranking the films as we watch.
Sheldon Cooper’s Holographic Laptop
So I noticed something that amused me while watching Big Bang Theory the other night — apparently Sheldon has a holographic display on his laptop. The real-world explanation, of course, is the conceit of television’s visual language, but that’s not nearly as much fun to believe.
