The Blue Box
When Kevin and I were younger, and too small to work dad’s record player, we had our own: the classic Fisher-Price phonograph. To go with this, Dad gave us a small blue box (well, blue, white, and green, but I’ve always thought of it as blue) with a bunch of old 45s that he and his brother Doug had collected when they were younger.
My Famous Awkward Family
Today, at long last, I got my copy of the AFP book, which uses both photos we submitted! One is on the back cover, and one is given the place of honor as the first featured photo in the book, opening Chapter One. We’re also given thanks in the Acknowledgements section as the first family to send in a shot.
MiniBreak: Corvallis
Emily, my sister-in-law, is just finishing her doctorate in oceanography, and has accepted a position doing post-doc work at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Great news, of course, but it does mean that they’re all moving across the country. Since that’s going to be a lot harder to visit than Corvallis, we wanted to make sure to get a visit with them in before they left.

Still Awkward After All These Years
Yesterday I was interviewed by a reporter for ABC News who was working on an article about AFP and the reactions from people who’ve stumbled across their photos on the site, and the article went live this morning! It features both of the shots of our family that are on AFP, and my part of the article comprises a fair chunk of the last third or so.
