About my tattoo

This entry was published at least two years ago (originally posted on April 20, 2001). Since that time the information may have become outdated or my beliefs may have changed (in general, assume a more open and liberal current viewpoint). A fuller disclaimer is available.

My tattooThis actually came about from an e-mail I was writing tonight, and I thought it was a bit too good to lose into the great bit bucket in the sky.

The meaning behind it…well, it’s kind of my life view. I’ve always liked the concept of the yin-yang — that in life there is always light and dark, good and bad, and they’re intertwined and essential to each other, you can’t have one without the other, and if you did, then it would render it meaningless without the other as a comparison.

My tattooBut when I found the design with the smileys integrated into it, it really struck a chord with me, in that much of my outlook on life is that no matter what happens to me, good or bad, there will always be something to balance it, and when things do get bad, one, they’ll get better at some point, and two, there is always something to laugh at or smile about in whatever’s going on in order to help me make it through it. I’ve seen lots of people get amazingly depressed over some stuff that, while it may seem mindblowing at first, always has some benefit to it. I guess it’s kind of related to two overused sayings — “For every cloud there is a silver lining”, and Nietzche’s (sp?) “What does not kill me makes me stronger”, but it’s not really either of those through and through…just something that means a lot to me.

  1. I, also, have never felt desire to tattoo or pierce myself and I have never found anything symbolic/significant enough to stamp onto my body. However, your particular tattoo (and its meaning) is a really neat concept. I agree 100% with you on your outlook on life. Cool.

  2. The tattoo is great. I feel the same way about tattoos. I’m not a big fan of painting yourself silly (because most people do get carried away) but I am considering of getting a small one myself. It’s a chocolate chip and the words “semi-sweet”. It has 3 meanings and one is quite obvious… I love chocolate, especially those Special Dark candy bars of Hershey’s. The second meaning is semi-sweet. Typically I am a sweetheart, but I have been known to be quite the crab (note: wireGIRL). And, lastly, a chip on my shoulder. Now when someone happens to ask, I can reply that “Chip is here to stay!”

  3. I don’t know how true this is but someone once told me that the Japanese Word for “Disaster” is the same as the Japanese Word for “Opportunity”. I don’t care if it’s true or not, but it is a good way to face life.

  4. Hey, Deniel/Deniz/Dansomething..How could you find this place huh?

    I am confused again…

    Who told you that ?????

  5. Michael, you dont have any other things to talk about ???

Nina also wants to know about you,
You are a rude guy, true !!!

Nina read most of your post here, you used to struggle alot for iving..

  6. Tattoos are personal so if it works for you, sweet. I think since it is a yin yang, and you have two smiley faces, one of them should be a sad face. On the dark side, your smiling, and on the light side your sad, with the mouth curve going the other way. Wiregirl is on drugs and sicily is a dick. Peace.
