On This Day

Should you dig back through my archives, please keep in mind that the further in the past a post was published, the more likely it is that the information has become outdated or my beliefs have changed. I sincerely believe that learning, growing, examining, and often changing beliefs is an integral part of being a responsible human being. My personal journey socially and politically has been ever leftwards, and there are many posts in the archives that I would not write the same way today, if at all. Thanks for understanding!

    • WA Virus Update None of this means we're out of the woods yet. But they're all good signs that we're doing the right things, however frustrating they may be.
    • Got out of the habit of my weekly Star Trek: Picard mini-reviews, thanks to the coronavirus stress, but just watched the final episode of the season, and I’m satisfied. Quibbles here and there, sure, but overall, a very good first season, and I’m looking forward to more. 🖖

    • Close to Home So...yeah. It appears that the Capitol Hill shooter was a neighbor of mine. The next building over, and I don't recognize him from the picture in the Times article, but still one of my neighbors.
    • Capitol Hill Tragedy So sad and terrifying.

    • I Love Cats I love cats. I love to pet their fur. I love to scratch their neck and chins and listen to them purr.
    • New I, Robot trailer out There's a new trailer for the movie I, Robot, based on Isaac Asimov's writing. I've been looking forward to this for a while, but, as with all movie properties based on works that I'm a fan of, there was some definite trepidation.

    • 'an historic' vs. 'a historic' Ever been unsure about the distinction between 'an historic' and 'a historic'? The question came up in a thread here recently and I did some investigating.
    • The truth? We can't handle the truth! On February 14, a Florida Appeals court ruled there is absolutely nothing illegal about lying, concealing or distorting information by a major press organization. The ruling basically declares it is technically not against any law, rule, or regulation to deliberately lie or distort the news on a television broadcast.
    • Because it's IMPORTANT CNN goes to font size 72
    • Al-Qaeda type? Gary Trudeau has been doing this for years and he can still make me laugh with his take on situations.

    • Relaxation, upgrades – and furrets! I ended up spending most of the weekend working with my computers. I've been running this webserver off the Public Beta of Mac OS X since the beta was released, and Saturday was (finally) the official release date of the full retail version of OS X.

    • [From Usenet: 3.26.95 1508] I'd suggest seeing if you have Eudora running when your computer tries to connect. Eudora can be set to check the mail at intervals, at which time it checks MacTCP to see if a connection is up.
